While the exact causes are unknown the Bowens disease skin disorder is considered as a precursor to squamous cell carcinoma and is typically classified as a precancerous condition. Its a very slow growing cancer. But it is usually found on areas that have been regularly exposed to the sun.
A particular problem with Bowens disease is that it is frequently found on the lower leg where the skin is often tight and sometimes quite fragile especially in older patients. Bowens disease can occur on any part of the body although the lower legs are most commonly affected. The part of the body that is most likely to be affected by Bowens disease is the lower leg not least because this is the most sun-exposed area of the body.
Sometimes they can affect the groin area and in men the penis.
